Blackpink Scores Highest-Charting Hit By A Korean Girl Group In US History

2019 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival - Weekend 2 - Day 1

Blackpink just broke an insane record with help from Lady Gaga.

Weeks ago, the South Korean girl group joined forces with Mother Monster for “Sour Candy,” the bittersweet bop that features on Gaga’s sixth studio album, Chromatica. Despite only cracking the top 40 of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart by debuting at No. 33, the charting still earned the band a record-breaking accomplishment.

According to Forbes, “Sour Candy” just became the highest-charting track in the history of the United States to be led by an all-female girl group from South Korea. To make the feat even sweeter, Blackpink’s Gaga duet dethroned the previous record-holder, which — you guessed it! — was already held by Blackpink. Before linking up with the “Born This Way” songbird, the four-piece nearly cut the top 40 with last year’s smash “Kill Your Love” claiming No. 41 at the time.

Blackpink’s latest triumph comes after a record of successful singles in recent years, including “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” and their team-up with Dua Lipa, “Kiss and Make Up,” which became a Song of Summer contender upon its late-2018 debut.

Additionally, the members are no strangers to defying the odds when it comes to making South Korea’s distinctive pop sound go mainstream here in the States. Following in the trailblazing footsteps of Wonder Girls, Blackpink is the only other K-pop girl group to appear on the Hot 100.
