Dax Shepard Reveals the One Regret He Has After Kristen Courthouse Wedding

Dax Shepard would have been fine just being “life partners” with wife Kristen Bell. The actor, podcast host and now game show host for FOX’s forthcoming pop culture game show produced by Justin Timberlake, Spin the Wheel, stopped by On Air With Ryan Seacrest on Tuesday, June 11, and shared that becoming a dad has changed his perspective on things.

The actor took a trip down memory lane and recalled his low-key October 2013 nuptials to wife Kristen Bell. The two waited to tie the knot after same sex marriage was legalized, supporting equality.

“I didn’t believe in it as an institution in that I wasn’t religious — I’m still not religious — so the notion of like proving to the state of California that I loved somebody seemed weird to me, but with that said, it occurred to me that this person I loved a lot did want to be married and believed in it and I thought, ‘Well, I can certainly give somebody something they want if it makes them happy that I don’t necessarily [need],’” Shepard reflected while talking about their wedding day, joking that he would have been happy also just getting pregnant, raising a family and living together “forever.”

The actor does have one regret though when it comes to their $46 courthouse wedding: Not including their immediate family and Bell’s father.

“We went across the street [after] to the park and took pictures with our daughter [Lincoln at the time] and then that was that,” he continued. “It was, for us, the greatest thing ever and no one had hurt feelings and it didn’t end up being 400 people and all that kind of stuff. Now, I will say,” he added. “When my daughter turned 1 years old, I did think, ‘Oh, man, if she gets married someday, I’d die if I didn’t get to see that.’ And I immediately called Kristen’s dad and I was like, ‘Hey, I really owe you an apology, I kind of robbed you of that sweet experience and I’m sorry.’ And he was like, ‘Appreciate it. Uh, yeah, I would have liked to have been there, but appreciate the apology.’ And I was like, Oh, man!’ There’s just so many things you have to have a kid to gain the perspective [of]. I was like [originally thinking] he’ll be grateful he doesn’t have to fly in.”

The couple are now parents to two daughters, Lincoln, 6, and Delta, 4

“I can’t stand wearing jewelry — it drives me bonkers,” Shepard added of his ring tattoo. “When I’m acting and if my character wears a ring, all I do is play with with the ring. The entire time I’m like, ‘When do we get this off?’ But I did want to send a signal to the nine women who find me attractive in America that I am married, but I did not want to wear jewelry, so this seemed liked the perfect [fit],” he jokingly concluded. “And more importantly, it has my daughters’ initials in it because their middle names are Bell.”

Too cute!
