New data has revealed that at least 230 LGBTQIA+ athletes have competed in the Olympics since the Winter and Summer Games kicked off in 1896.

According to research by Online Gambling, LGBTQIA+ athletes, some of which were out at the time and some who weren't, have won 93 gold medals, 75 silver medals and 61 bronze medals. As for the most successful LGBTQIA+ athletes in Olympic history, Dutch speed skater Ireen Wüst takes home the title with five Gold, five Silver and a Bronze medal across the last four Winter Games. She's followed by Ian Thorpe, who has won a total of nine medals in swimming and Karin Büttner-Janz, who has won a total of seven medals in artistic gymnastics.

The LGBTQIA+ is still making history as the Tokyo Summer games continue. Laurel Hubbard has made a name for herself as the first openly transgender athlete to compete in the competition.
