Man Dies After Suspected Shark Attack on Cape Cod

A 26-year-old man swimming at a Cape Cod beach died Sunday after falling victim to what experts are calling the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in more than 80 years.

According to Wellfleet police, the man was bitten around noon on Saturday by what is believed to be a shark at Newcomb Hollow Beach. The victim and a friend of his were boogie boarding some 30-yards off the beach when the incident occurred.

Officials identified the man as Arthur Medici of Revere, Massachusetts, saying he died in a Cape Cod hospital shortly after the attack.

The official cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner, but the acting deputy chief of Cape Cod National Seashore, Chris Hartsgrove, told CNN that the injuries appeared to be consistent with those from a shark.

The attack is the second in as many months near the idyllic getaway. A 61-year-old man suffered puncture wounds after a shark bit him while he was standing about 30 yards offshore.

Experts say the last recorded fatal shark attack in Massachusetts was in 1936 according to records from the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History.
